Psychiatry

What is the difference between a "psychologist" and a "psychiatrist"?

Generally speaking, a "psychologist" is a Mental Health Professional who is trained to help individuals better understand themselves and learn why they behave in certain ways, and to help those individuals modify their perceptions and adjust their behaviors to achieve greater happiness and fulfillment. On the other hand, a "psychiatrist" is a specially-trained medical doctor who has developed an expertise to delve more closely into the biochemistry of the brain -- to try to adjust chemical imbalances that can cause mental distress and other mental disorders. Many psychiatrists also offer psychological counseling.

Why choose Northern Integrated Health?

Expertise - Our psychiatrist is triple boarded in family practice, general psychiatry and addiction psychiatry, having completed extensive fellowship training.

Experience - Our psychiatrist has multiple years of experience diagnosing and treating dual diagnoses of MI/CD (mental illness and chemical dependency) and very difficult to manage conditions.

Availability - Nothing is more frustrating than having a pressing need for services but having to wait the several months that is typical for a psychiatric appointment.  Our psychiatrist has rapid appointments available, and so a three month wait is not required.

Integrated Care - Our psychiatrist works collaboratively with psychologists and other mental health professionals at our integrated clinic.
